NISLT Inducts 65 Lab Technologists |
A total of 65 Graduands from the University of Port Harcourt were inducted into the profession by the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) at the 3rd Induction Ceremony (Batch B) of the School of Science Laboratory Technology (SSLT).
Performing the Ceremony which held at the Ebitimi Banigo Auditorium, University Park, last Tuesday, Registrar/Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Dr Ighodalo Ijagbone, advised the Inductees to abide by the ethics of the profession into which they had been admitted as Associate Members.
He charged them to be honest and imbibe the principles of integrity, transparency, professional competence, accountability and take full responsibility for their actions, never to take more than they can deliver, be objective, respect the dignity of man, set a good example, as well as dress properly to earn respect.
Dr Ijagbone, who commended the positive role the University has continued to play in the production of graduates of science laboratory technology, said that it is one of the universities that have ventured into the programme and considering the capital intensive requirements to run it, we must therefore commend the Vice-Chancellor, other Principal Officers and Management for the success story recorded so far.
"I advise the inductees to become worthy ambassadors of the University and profession. Let me inform you that you are new ambassadors of the profession. As certified professionals of science laboratory technology, you are required to imbibe the ethics of the profession. You are to assert yourselves and project the image of the profession as you undertake your practice for public service,” he stated.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ajienka said that the event offered an opportunity to appraise the progress made so far in the School, noting that the Inductees have every reason to be proud of their achievements.
Professor Ajienka thanked the leadership of the School for the success it has recorded so far, observing that it has proved its capacity to accomplish the task set before it by Senate of the University. The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the NISLT for its unflinching support to ensure that standards were not compromised. He also expressed optimism that the Inductees will achieve success in their chosen endeavours and become worthy ambassadors of the University, advising them to ensure that the best industry practices are maintained in the practices of the profession at all times, “that way you, would have justified the investment made in the course of your training.”
In her address, Provost of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Professor Nnenna Frank-Peterside, said that by dint of hard work, the graduands were able to pass through the rigours of academic procedures in the University. She congratulated their parents and guardians for their love and sacrifice and provisions that made it possible for them to attain this new height in their professional careers, praying that they reap the fruits of their labour. Professor Frank-Peterside charged them to be worthy ambassadors of their Alma Mater and the nation.
Earlier in his address, Dean of the School, Professor Anthony Ataga, who described the event as a landmark achievement in the lives of 65 graduands, for satisfying the conditions approved by Senate of the University for Graduation, advised them to ensure that they adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession. He charged them to utilize the knowledge and skills acquired in their various fields for the technological development of Nigeria and the world at large.
The event featured presentation of the 2014 SSLT Merit Awards to Professor Ajienka and Dr Ijagbone.
Earlier, the NISLT delegation had paid a courtesy visit on the Vice-Chancellor at the Committee Room.
